The
First Line : |
|
| |
|
| |
Line 1 the backbone of the system, was created by connecting
the existing railway line from Helwan, south of Cairo, to the existing railway line Cairo to El Marg in the north east,
by means of a new underground line below the Central Business District, making a total length of 44km.
The route of Line 1 passes through intensely congested areas, very close to buildings and public structure. The
selection of the route made maximum use of existing roads and public land , to minimise the need for demolition and
underpinning of existing building.
This line
has 34 stations, 5 of which are under ground. The line is designed to carry 60,000 passengers per hour in each
direction, in 9 coach trains, operating with a minimum 2.5 minute headway at a maximum speed of 100km/hr. The Line presently carries 1.5
million passengers per day.
The construction of this line commenced in 1982 and was divided into two phases. Phase 1, with a length of 28km,
from Helwan to Mubarak Station in Ramses Square, including the 4.5 Km underground section. Phase1 was inaugurated in September 1987.
Phase 2 included the electrification
of the existing diesel hauled line from Ramses Square to El
Marg. It involed renovation of the tracks, modernisation of
some stations, construction of 3 new stations and the
renovation and extension of the rolling stock workshop at Tura
on the Helwan Line. This phase was inaugurated in April 1989.
A further extension with 1.3Km northwards to the Cairo
Ring Road was brought into service in 2000 .

Line commenced in 1993 and, the line has 19 kilometres long, 18 stations, 4 at grade, 2 on viaduct and 12 underground. Power supply to the
trains is through a third rail. The line uses heavy rolling stock, eight-cars each.
