During the construction, there were a number of constraints affecting the alignment of the two tunnels and the selection of the locations of ventilation stations in this congested area. Some of the challenges were:-
|
| |
passing underneath an existing main sewer tunnel, 17m below ground level in Port Said Street.
|
| |
avoiding damage to the existing ancient buildings. Extensive surveys and monitoring of the ground level and important buildings was undertaken to prevent damage.
|
| |
avoiding the piled foundations of an existing bridge in El Azhar Street.
|
| |
Avoiding and diverting existing Utilities.
|
| |
Road traffic had to be kept flowing smoothly,

These challenges were overcome by careful
planning and execution of the works. Extensive surveys were carried out to identify the foundations and the structural condition of the existing
structures, close to the alignment. In some cases special grouting and micro-piles were used to stabilise the ground.
