Purchasing of 4 air-conditioned Trains for line 2

Supporting the foundation of 6th October bridge during the passage of the TBM

During the executing of line 2
The underground metro passing under the Nile River for the first time by using the TBM Nefertiti in 1997  
Previous projects executed inside the Great Cairo region :
Line 2 ( Shobra El Khima – El Mounib ) :

This line extends from Shobra El Khima up to Ramses square , then it passes through Attaba square, Tahrir square crossing underneath the two branches of the Nile river till El Dokki , El Giza , Om El Masryeen and ends at El Mounib . Importance of this line is due to the absence of existed infrastructure as the case of line 1 , moreover the latest excavation technology at this time is applied by using the Tunnel boring machine which is considered the new generation of the machine used in digging Mansh Tunnel between England and France .

This Line consists of 20 stations , a number of 12 stations thereof are underground, 6 ongrad stations , and 2 elevated stations . The total length is 21.6 km. , the design capacity is 1.960 Million passengers . The current transportation volume is 1 Million Passenger/Day . The execution Phases are :

Phase 1 ( Shobra El Khima – Ramses ):

8 km. length – 8 stations – inaugurated in 1996

Phase 2 ( Ramses – El Tahrir ):

3 km. length – 3 stations – inaugurated in 1997

Phase 3 ( El Tahrir – Cairo University ) :*

5.5 km. length – 4 stations - inaugurated in 1999

Phase 4 ( Cairo university – Om El Masryeen ) :*

2.7 km. length -3 stations – inaugurated on 2000

Utilization of the TBM for the first time in the middle east

Phase 5 ( Om El Masryeen – El Mounib ) :

length – 2 stations – inaugurated in 2005

The cost & Financing Method :

The project cost is 9.7 Billion Egyptian Pound , totally financed from the state budget through Governmental financing – local facilities from Egyptian banks – self financing by Ministry of Transport – foreign facilities .

Economic Efficiency :

This line achieves an indirect economic return , about 975 Million Egyptian pound /year as

-Saving value of the time losses / year =760 Million EGP

-Saving value of the power /year = 215 Miliion EGP.

In addition to saving in health and the after indirect benefits .

Upgrading Line 2 of the metro :

1-Purchasing 4 no. air-conditioned trains for line 2 – march 2011

3-Supply of 750 no. contactless tickets gate for both line 1 & line 2

4-Studying of Radio system renovation for both line 1 & line 2 .
